Friends of Alfie Martin continually works towards providing the best possible equipment for neonatal care in Yorkshire. We work closely with lead clinicians at the Leeds Centre for Newborn Care to identify key equipment that either needs to be replaced or upgraded to allow critically ill babies access to the best possible care.
We are proud to have donated integral pieces of equipment to date, such as a Globetrotter transport unit, a Baby Leo Hybrid incubator, a Surgical Resuscitaire, a brain monitor and many more items that help critically ill babies.
This year we are aiming to fundraise for the following items:
CRITICOOL COOLING MACHINE
The Criticool cooling machine and single patient use mattresses provides therapeutic hypothermia for 72 hrs after birth for babies with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. This has been shown to reduce brain injury after a lack of oxygen around the time of birth.
Cost approximately £15,000 each and would ideally like three.
DRAEGER HEATED PLATFORM FOR SURGICAL PROCEDURES/CENTRAL LINE INSERTION/TRANSPORT
This is a version of the Draeger intensive care platform with a heated mattress, which is used for babies having minor surgical procedures or insertion of central lines whilst on the NICU. It is also used to transport babies to and from the operating theatre.
Cost approximately £23,000 and would ideally like two.
GE GIRAFFE OMNIBED CARESTATION HYBRID INCUBATOR
Used for very preterm babies in intensive care and allows good thermal care but also good emergency access. The centre is aiming to replace the standard incubators with these hybrid ones.
Cost approximately £30,000 and would ideally like three.
QED 360 DEGREE PHOTOTHERAPY MACHINE
Allows us to treat babies with very serious levels of jaundice as effectively as possible by directing the blue light from all angles simultaneously. Untreated, very high jaundice levels can be toxic to the brain.
Cost approximately £10,000 and would ideally like two.
SENTEC TRANSCUTANEOUS COâ‚‚ MONITORS
Allows staff to monitor a baby’s COâ‚‚ without so many blood tests or heel pricks.
Cost approximately £7,000 each.
ARDO CARUM BREAST PUMPS
For new mums to express breast milk, which is particularly important for these little ones who often have under-developed digestive systems.
Cost approximately £1,305 each and ideally would like five.
HEATED MATTRESSES FOR BASSINETTE COTS
To give a boost to the smallest babies who no longer need an incubator.
Cost approximately £1,500.
AIR MATTRESSES FOR BABIES WITH SPINA BIFIDA
Aims to prevent pressure injuries that occur from immobility.
Cost approximately £1,000 – £2,000.
SISS BABYCONTROL APNOEA ALARMS AND PRESSURE PODS
To monitor the older babies in a cot when wall monitors or saturation monitors are no longer needed and for babies rooming in with parents for the first time.
Cost approximately £1,000.
NEO BLUE BILIBLANKETS
To treat jaundice, but in a way that doesn’t prevent parents picking up the baby.
Cost approximately £3,300.
SINGLE PATIENT USE TECOTHERM MATTRESSES
For babies receiving therapeutic hypothermia. They allow parents to hold their babies while they are having this critical treatment.
Cost approximately £370 per box of three.
STETHOSCOPES AND OPHTHALMOSCOPES
Stethoscopes are used to listen to sounds produced by the body, such as the heartbeat and breathing, while ophthalmoscopes are used to assess the overall health of the eyes.
Cost approximately £50 for stethoscopes and £150 for ophthalmoscopes.
Although our focus is on providing critical equipment for the care of newborns, we know how important it is to support the wider family during a stressful stay in hospital, so we sometimes include additional items such as these in our wish list.
FUJIFILM INSTAX SQUARE FILMS WITH WHITE BORDER
We try to provide an instant picture to each family on admission. This is especially good if mum is in the delivery suite.
Cost approximately £17 per box.
